On September 10, 2026, Google released a standalone Gemini app for Windows. Instead of opening Gemini only in your browser, you’ll now be able to launch the AI assistant directly on your desktop—next to Word, Outlook, or your browser—using the Alt+Spacebar shortcut. We’ll show you what the app can do, what’s still missing, and what the initial reactions have been.

What is the Gemini app for Windows?
The Gemini app for Windows is a standalone desktop client that Google describes as a “lightweight” application that runs in the background without noticeably slowing down your computer. Instead of keeping a tab open in your browser, Gemini integrates into your current work via a floating window. According to Erin Pettigrew, Director of Product Management for the Gemini app at Google, the application is designed to work “seamlessly alongside your favorite tools and everyday applications.”
Alt + Spacebar: Quick Access Without Interrupting Your Workflow
The app’s key feature is the
Alt + Spacebar
shortcut. This opens Gemini as an overlay on top of your currently active application, whether you’re working on a document in Word or editing a spreadsheet in Excel. Google cites examples such as a quick fact check in a document or a few snappy title suggestions for a presentation before returning to your actual workflow.
Features: From Chat to Image Generation
In addition to the classic chat feature, the app also includes the creative tools familiar from the web version:
