Google shipped a native
Gemini app
for Windows on September 10, 2026, ending roughly two and a half years of Windows users being routed to a browser tab whenever they wanted to talk to Google’s AI assistant. The app is a free download from gemini.google/desktop, runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, and is summoned system-wide with the keyboard shortcut Alt + Space, according to

. But the more interesting story, two days after launch, is not that Gemini finally has a Windows app. It is what that app cannot do yet, and what that gap says about how far behind Google still is in the fight for the Windows desktop.
Microsoft Copilot ships wired into the Windows taskbar, the Windows key, and the settings shell of every new PC. Gemini, by contrast, arrives as a downloaded, sign-in-required overlay app whose only system-level hook is a keyboard shortcut historically associated with Windows’ own search and Run dialog behavior, as Gagadget and Thurrott both noted in their launch coverage. That distinction, integration depth versus overlay convenience, is where this analysis focuses, because it explains why a genuinely capable AI assistant from the world’s largest search company still faces a steep, structural climb against an assistant Microsoft controls at the operating-system level.
