The venture capital industry has shattered every record on the books in 2026, pouring more than $516 billion into U.S. companies through the first three quarters alone — a figure that already exceeds the highest full-year tally ever recorded by 44 percent and sits 61 percent above last year’s pace. But behind the headline number lies a story of extraordinary concentration: artificial intelligence accounted for 82.7 percent of all deal value this year, a level of sector dominance that surpasses even the dot-com peak.
A Historic Quarter for Venture Capital
According to the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, venture capitalists invested more than $98 billion into 3,640 U.S. companies during the third quarter of 2026 alone. The pace through the first nine months puts the industry on track for a year that dwarfs anything in its history, including the frenzy of 2021. Yet Q3 was slightly slower than the first two quarters, largely because two of the largest AI labs, Anthropic and OpenAI, both paused their own fundraising rounds.
What makes this cycle different from previous booms is the sheer scale of individual rounds. Ninety percent of capital disbursements went to rounds of at least $50 million, up from 77 percent in 2025. The money is not spreading across hundreds of small startups; it is concentrating in a handful of companies building frontier AI systems, custom chips, and the infrastructure to run them.
The AI Concentration Problem
AI’s 82.7 percent share of deal value, with roughly 45 percent of deal count, represents a concentration that exceeds even the internet boom at its height. The comparison is not casual — during the dot-com peak, no single sector commanded more than 60 percent of venture dollars. The implication is stark:
