A controversial plan by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to equip officers with thousands of electric shock gloves has triggered a fresh backlash, with three Democratic lawmakers demanding that the procurement be halted immediately.
Indian American Congressman Shri Thanedar, along with Bennie Thompson and Lou Correa, warned that the devices could be misused by poorly trained officers and potentially cause serious injury or death.

ICE plans to spend up to $20 million on what the Department of Homeland Security calls “conductive distraction and de-escalation devices”, with delivery of thousands of units expected by March.
But despite their official description as de-escalation equipment, the gloves are designed to deliver a painful electrical shock when activated.

The technology is intended to give officers another option for controlling or deterring a person during a confrontation without immediately resorting to conventional weapons.
The gloves can deliver an electrical charge through the wearer’s hand, allowing an officer to shock a person at close range.
Supporters of such technology could argue that it provides officers with an additional intermediate use-of-force option, potentially allowing them to control a confrontation without using firearms.
Critics, however, say the close-contact nature of the device raises serious questions about misuse, excessive force and accountability.
The lawmakers said the equipment could be particularly dangerous when used by officers who have not received adequate training in the use of force.
