Oil companies are now connecting artificial intelligence directly to drilling and production operations.
Oil companies have spent years using artificial intelligence to analyse seismic data, monitor wells and predict equipment failures. The technology is now entering a new phase: AI systems are being connected directly to drilling and production operations and, within defined limits, are beginning to make decisions and act on them.
In Abu Dhabi, that transition is already underway.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is using AI to monitor wells and production equipment, identify changes in operating conditions and, in some cases, automatically adjust operations, according to AIQ, the Abu Dhabi-based energy AI company.
AIQ's RoboWell system was deployed at ADNOC's offshore NASR field in 2024 to autonomously operate wells and adjust their performance as conditions change.
ADNOC later said it planned to expand the technology to more than 500 wells.
AI is moving from advice to action
From analysing wells to operating them
For years, AI in oil and gas was primarily a decision-support tool. Software could analyse seismic surveys, identify patterns in reservoir data, predict equipment failures or flag an underperforming well. Engineers would then decide what to do.
RoboWell changes part of that process. It continuously monitors production conditions and can adjust a well's operations without waiting for an operator to manually change each setting.
Reuters reported in 2024 that ADNOC was using more than 30 AI tools across its business, g
